Breaking The Cycle: Introduction
Written by Crystal Yeager
Breaking the Cycle refers to stopping an action, way of thinking, or a generational process, which then positively impacts your life or the life of those around you. “Breaking the cycle refers to not participating in dysfunctional and/or unhealthy behavior, often commonplace in one's family, to keep it from continuing through future generations. A cycle-breaker is somebody who sees an unhealthy cycle of behavior in their family of origin and intentionally works to break that cycle” (Break the Cycle, Farlex Dictionary of Idioms, 2015).
It is important to take time to assess your life and see what things are in your life, that you are unhappy with, and commit to making the change, be the cycle breaker, be the person who stops the unhealthy cycle of behaviors in your own life and family. Seek support though therapy, religious connections, and support from family and/or friends.
