Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach designed to strengthen the parent-child relationship, improve parenting skills, and address behavioral and emotional challenges in children.
PCIT is grounded in several fundamental principles that we believe can be valuable for you and your child:
Structured and Play-Based: PCIT utilizes structured and play-based interactions between parents and children. It involves specific techniques and activities that enhance positive parent-child interactions.
Improving Parenting Skills: PCIT focuses on teaching parents practical parenting skills, including positive reinforcement, consistent discipline, and effective communication. These skills empower parents to manage challenging behaviors more effectively.
Two Phases: PCIT typically consists of two phases: Child-Directed Interaction (CDI) and Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI). In the CDI phase, parents learn to follow their child's lead during play, promoting positive attention and attachment. In the PDI phase, parents take the lead in play while using their learned skills to manage behavior.
Empowering Parents: PCIT empowers parents by providing them with practical tools to handle challenging behaviors, reduce conflicts, and foster a nurturing and secure attachment with their child.
Behavioral Concerns: PCIT is often used to address behavioral concerns in children, including aggression, defiance, tantrums, and attention difficulties. It can be effective for children with various behavioral and emotional challenges.
Enhancing the Parent-Child Bond: PCIT strongly emphasizes strengthening the parent-child bond. By improving the quality of interactions, it helps create a more positive and supportive family environment.
PCIT is a collaborative process involving the parent and child actively participating in therapy sessions. It gives parents the skills and confidence to manage challenging behaviors while promoting a loving and nurturing relationship with their children.
