Crafting Authenticity: Retirement Reflection On Choosing Family-Centered Celebration Over Tradition

Written by Lawrence Librando

As I approach the culmination of 24 years of dedicated service in the Navy, retirement looms on the horizon. A decision weighs on my mind – whether or not to hold a retirement ceremony. Well-meaning voices suggest that such an event is not for me, but for my family who have stood by my side through countless deployments and sacrifices. Their endurance and strength have been unwavering, even in the face of separations and uncertainty.

Undoubtedly, my family deserves recognition, a celebration of their resiliency, their unwavering commitment, and their loyalty to both me and a higher purpose. Their support allowed me to dutifully serve for nearly a quarter of a century. Yet, as I ponder the idea of a retirement ceremony, I can't help but question its conventional setup.

Traditionally, these ceremonies revolve around the retiree, with the family playing a secondary role. Many individuals devote their valuable time to rehearse, participate, and attend, some genuinely, while others compelled by duty or self-interest. I find myself reluctant to impose on anyone's schedule, nor do I wish to be perceived as indebted to those who might attend. A retirement ceremony, in its traditional form, doesn't align with my values.

Instead, I envision celebrating this significant milestone in a way that reflects the essence of my journey. I plan to embrace this transition with my family by my side, acknowledging their sacrifices and shared dedication. We will create a ceremony of our own, one that focuses on unity, reflection, and gratitude. A ceremony that is not about a fleeting moment of recognition, but a timeless tribute to the bonds that held us together during my service.

As I prepare to bid farewell to my Navy career, I am reminded that the true celebration lies in the love, strength, and unity we've fostered as a family. Our journey has been one of collective determination, and our ceremony will symbolize the power of togetherness that allowed us to thrive even in the face of challenges.

So, as the pages turn to a new chapter, I choose to honor my family's enduring support by celebrating not with pomp and circumstance, but with authenticity and gratitude. Their presence has been my greatest reward, and our self-crafted ceremony will stand as a testament to the bonds that define us.
